Paintings
Fairfield Porter
Fairfield Porter has recently impacted my work when I studied him for a master copy. The way he blocks out tone so distinctly, especially on the face, really helped me to see the face in planes of light rather than specific “objects.”
Hung Liu
I discovered Hung Liu in researching for a paper. Her works have greatly inspired and motivated me on several accounts. She has inspired me to focus more on the figure, especially in big “figure-ground” shapes. She has also pushed me to want to get bolder with my use of color.
My Work
In my recent works, I have been focusing on figure-ground type of portraits. After I did a master copy and transcription (pictured left) of a Fairfield Porter painting, my work developed greatly. I was very inspired to start pushing more planar shapes for tone. I often think about Hung Liu when I’m deciding what colors to use and push to try colors I usually wouldn’t.
Ceramics
Henri Matisse
Henri Matisse is one of my favorite painters, but his paper cutouts have recently inspired my work in ceramics greatly. The shapes and patterns he used in his work push me to look for ways I can incorporate similar shapes in my own work.
My Work
I do not usually have specific influences for how I shape or glaze my pieces, I draw them from various places, but Matisse has begun to influence my design work considerably. I have a great passion for using big shapes and patterns in my work, and Matisse’s cutouts have introduced to me a direction that I want to pursue.
Graphics
Edward Rushca
Edward Ruscha has considerably influenced the style I use in a lot of my graphic work. I love his very flat, graphic style, which I seek to incorporate into some of my own work. I also am inspired by how he uses type and depth.
My Work
I have a great passion for experimenting with type and flat, graphic shapes that has only grown as my work has developed. Ruscha’s work with graphic style illustrations and type has significantly impacted how I work.
