Artist Statement
I love the process of watching a creation come to life, whether it be graphics, ceramics, paintings, or drawings. I love to start with an idea and see how it can be accomplished in the end. My own work is typically characterized by big “figure-ground” shapes and patterns, but the more my work grows, the more I seek to experiment and push myself, especially in ways that I was previously uncomfortable in executing. Creating art is not usually about going from “point A” of starting the piece to “point B” of finishing it. It is about the process of struggling and living with the piece, about putting a piece of yourself in everything you create, about learning as much as you can and having breakthroughs from what seems to be a failure. Creating art for me is never a perfect, linear thing – I aim to try and let go of the urge to make everything perfect let my work wander and expand as it needs, to live in the uncomfortable moments and discover the unexpected things that can come from uncomfortableness. I hope to move others, artists or not, to keep working and not let trying or difficult aspects stop them from pushing their work, but to wade through the uncomfortable moments and learn to live there for a while in order to come out better on the other side.
About the Artist
Christian Lovett was born and raised in small town Mississippi singing in church, absorbing as much 80s music as she could, and drawing on everything in sight. She still lives in the Magnolia State with her husband and their two spastic cats. She will graduate in May of 2021 from William Carey University with a Bachelor of Fine Arts in Graphic Design and wants nothing more than to grow gray with her husband and make art to the glory of God for the rest of her life.
